Inpainting is the technique of regenerating only the masked region of an existing image — the standard tool for background swap, object removal, garment editing, and restoration. It comes from classical computer vision but entered everyday design workflows in the Diffusion Models era through Stable Diffusion inpainting, DALL-E inpainting, and Adobe Firefly Generative Fill. Combined with ControlNet, local edits can respect a pose or edge map. It's the sibling of outpainting (extending beyond an image's boundary).
