Extended Thinking is the user-visible long-thinking mode Anthropic introduced for its Claude models. The model produces explicit internal reasoning steps before answering and, when appropriate, surfaces them to the user. As a productized form of Long Thinking it functions as Anthropic's response to OpenAI o1 and DeepSeek R1. It has become a defining capability for Claude Sonnet and Claude Opus inside the Reasoning Models category.
