ControlNet, published by Lvmin Zhang et al. in February 2023, is a technique for conditioning Diffusion Models like Stable Diffusion on structural inputs — edge maps, pose skeletons, depth maps, sketches. It enables this conditioning via a parallel control network without retraining the frozen base model, which accelerated the move from prompt-only generation toward professional, controllable workflows. It became core to Inpainting, style transfer, and character-consistency pipelines. A rich node library grew up around ControlNet in the ComfyUI ecosystem.
