Agentic engineering is the umbrella discipline of designing, shipping and maintaining LLM-driven agent systems in production — a new field that sits at the intersection of classic software engineering, ML and prompt engineering. The term emerged as Anthropic, OpenAI and other frontier labs invested in agent product lines from 2024 onwards, capturing the space between 'vibe coding' and enterprise software engineering. In practice it covers Tool Definition Schema design, building Evaluation Loops, placing Guardrails, memory and state management, error recovery and observability. It is the heart of the 'AI engineer' role and, by 2026, has become a standard specialisation alongside frontend and backend engineering.
